Diaspora
Definition
A population dispersed from its original homeland to other parts of the world. The African diaspora was shaped in large part by the Atlantic slave trade, which forced millions of people across the ocean, and it includes communities in the Caribbean, North and South America and Europe. Diaspora communities preserved and remade languages, foods, music and faith, and they continue to shape public memory. See also: forced migration, and the guide Legacies of the Atlantic Slave Trade.
