Enslaved person

Definition

A human being forced into slavery. The term emphasises that enslavement was a condition imposed on the person and not an identity, which is why many historians and educators prefer it to the word slave. Using it also keeps attention on the individual's name, family, skills and language before and after capture. In sources where the older word appears, quote it accurately and explain it.
