Manumission

Definition

The formal release of an enslaved person by an owner, or the act of gaining freedom through purchase or legal process. It was granted rarely and under varied conditions, and sometimes people saved money over years to buy freedom for themselves or relatives. Manumission freed individuals without ending the system, and freed people often faced restrictions.
