Did abolition bring real equality?
The answer
No, legal abolition did not guarantee equal rights. In the British Caribbean, formerly enslaved people first had to work as apprentices, and elsewhere they faced poverty, coercive labour, denial of land and political rights, and discrimination. Freed communities built churches, schools and businesses and continued to campaign for full citizenship, which links abolition to later struggles for equality. A date in a law book is therefore not the same as lived freedom, and good teaching separates the two.
