What was the Haitian Revolution?

The answer

The Haitian Revolution was an uprising of enslaved people in the French colony of Saint-Domingue that began in August 1791, ended slavery there and led to the independence of Haiti, declared on 1 January 1804. Leaders included Toussaint Louverture. Haiti was the first state in the Americas founded by formerly enslaved people, and the revolution frightened slaveholding powers while inspiring others across the Atlantic world.
