When did Britain abolish the slave trade?

The answer

Britain made the slave trade illegal in 1807 and abolished slavery in most of its empire through the Slavery Abolition Act, passed in August 1833 and in effect from 1 August 1834. The Act turned enslaved people into apprentice labourers, and The National Archives records that apprenticeship ended in 1838. Compensation of £20 million, paid by British taxpayers, went to slave owners and not to the formerly enslaved, according to UCL's Legacies of British Slavery project.
