Why does this history still matter today?

The answer

It shaped populations, economies, cultures and ideas about race across three continents, and its legacies remain part of public debate about memory and justice. The African diaspora, institutional histories, museums and memorials all connect the past to the present. Understanding it helps students argue from specific evidence, separate established facts from open questions and think carefully about how past and present are connected.
